There seems to be a bit of confusion between the categories and the tags. These are more helpful for SEO.
Let’s clear the two things first. What are tags and what are categories?
Tags
Tags are the words that briefly define your post, like what detail it encloses, what is the domain behind the post. The tags are responsible for the distribution of your content for ease of viewing.
Let’s have an example,
If you are sharing the recipe for pancakes, you can add up several tags that make it easier for your viewers to have an idea. You can add tags like breakfast, simple recipes, easy-to-make, and many more. If your viewer is searching for something for breakfast, it will be easy for him when he gets a clue.
Categories
As the name says it is the division, classification, or grouping, categories are the defined domains in which you classify your website. For instance, if you own a food blogging website, you may categorize it as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and appetizers. One can also classify the blogs as meat, chicken, fruits, etc.
If you are already creating content and uploading it on your WordPress website, you must be familiar with one of the major differences between tags and categories. Can you guess?
Yes!
It is the compulsion and choice distinction.
Tags can be embedded and can be ignored but on the other hand, categories are necessary to be filled out for every post.
For the newbies, the question arises that what would happen if you don’t categorize your post?
If you don’t categorize, WordPress will conventionally categorize it as Uncategorized, which is a default category in WordPress. If you want to clear this issue, one thing you might do that is very helpful is that you can rename that Uncategorized category to something like Miscellaneous. It will help you that even when you are not sure that under which category your blog or article can be placed, it will be automatically placed in Miscellaneous and that’s good!
Tags are not destined to be placed in the article or on the blog instead it is something hidden but can be very helpful for your users to find the relevant search.
Add Tags and Categories in WordPress
In order to add the tags and categories, there are a few simplest step that you need to follow:
Create your post.
Check the right side of the document under Post settings.
On the third number, you can see Categories.
Right below categories, there are tags.
From here, you can choose from already defined categories or if you want another category, you can add a new category as well.
If you forgot to add a category while creating the post, don’t worry! You can categorize it by editing it and following the same easy steps.
